Readers Are Leaders

Our Work

The Literacy, Leadership & Community Book Initiative.

A 12-month community programme built around four things: getting books into young people’s hands, making reading worth their time, putting them in front of people worth meeting, and building the skills that reading opens onto.

Who this is for

Children and teenagers in economically disadvantaged communities in Georgia — young people who may have limited access to books outside of school, and limited exposure to the adults whose careers reading made possible.

Where

Atlanta and the surrounding Georgia communities, delivered through community venues, schools, bookstores and partner organizations rather than a facility of our own.

For how long

An initial 12-month programme period, designed from the outset to be repeatable annually rather than to run once.

Our Model02

From reading to leadership.

Books are the entry point, not the destination. Each stage is what makes the next one possible.

  1. Book Access

A book of their own, chosen and kept.

  2. Reading Engagement

Reading becomes something they want to do.

  3. Critical Thinking

    Questions, interpretation, disagreement.

  4. Communication

Saying what they think so others understand.

  5. Confidence

Self-belief that holds up under pressure.

  6. Leadership

    Responsibility taken, not assigned.

  7. Opportunity

Education, training and a future with options.

Our Program Architecture03

Four parts, built to hold each other up.

Access without engagement is a book on a shelf. Engagement without mentorship runs out of road. The programme is designed as one system.

01Access

We put high-quality, age-appropriate books into the hands of young people at no cost, through organized book drives and community distribution.

02Engagement

We create consistent, meaningful reading experiences — reading sessions, book discussions, literacy challenges and community events that make reading worth showing up for.

03Mentorship

We connect young people with authors, educators, entrepreneurs and community leaders who can speak to what education actually opened for them.

04Leadership

We develop communication, critical thinking, confidence, responsibility and constructive decision-making — the skills reading is a route into, not the end of.

Delivery model

How the programme actually runs.

Community book drives

Books purchased, donated and collected, then distributed directly to young people at no cost.

Literacy events

Community gatherings built around reading — designed to be culturally relevant and worth attending.

Guest appearances

Authors, educators, entrepreneurs and community leaders in conversation with young people.

Youth discussions

Book discussions and leadership conversations that build comprehension and communication.

Family participation

Parents and caregivers engaged so reading continues after the event ends.

Measurement

Short pre- and post-program questionnaires capturing shifts in attitude toward reading.

New hardcover books stacked in colour-sorted piles beside canvas tote bags and boxes on a library counter, prepared for a book drive.
Books prepared for distribution. Every one of them leaves with somebody.

12-month objectives

What we have committed to doing.

These are the objectives set out in the programme proposal. They are commitments to be measured against, not results.

  1. 01

Distribute approximately 2,000 books to youth at no charge.

  2. 02

Conduct at least 6 community literacy and book-distribution events.

  3. 03

Reach approximately 500 young people in underserved communities.

  4. 04

Engage parents, educators, community organizations and positive role models in literacy promotion.

  5. 05

Introduce participating youth to reading-based activities that strengthen comprehension, communication, critical thinking and leadership.

  6. 06

Measure participation, books distributed and changes in participants’ attitudes toward reading through simple pre/post surveys.

Where things stand

Active, proposed and future — kept separate.

Nonprofit websites routinely blur these together. We have separated them so that anybody assessing this organization can see exactly what exists today and exactly what funding would start.

Active now

What is running today

  • Organizational formation, 501(c)(3) determination and governance setup.
  • Programme design, budgeting and measurement framework.
  • Funder outreach and partnership development.
  • Book sourcing conversations with publishers, bookstores and donors.

Proposed — 12 months

What funding starts

  • Purchase and free distribution of age-appropriate books to young people.
  • At least six community literacy and book-distribution events.
  • Guest appearances from authors, educators, entrepreneurs and community leaders.
  • Reading sessions, book discussions, literacy challenges and leadership conversations.
  • Pre- and post-programme questionnaires measuring change in attitudes to reading.

Future phase

What this is built to become

  • An annual, repeatable community literacy programme.
  • Expansion to additional communities throughout Georgia and beyond.
  • Sustained publisher, bookstore and corporate supply relationships.
  • Published annual reporting against targets.

In developmentProgramme delivery dates, event locations and a published calendar will appear here once funding is confirmed and venues are booked.

We’re not simply giving young people books.

We’re helping them discover what those books can unlock.
